If you are planning a trip aboard, whether it is for a long or short stay, there are a number of items you will need to bring that will be essential should you run into any health problems. Although bringing a full first-aid kit won’t be necessary, it is vital that you have the basics covered, especially if you are travelling to a location where supplies are limited.
If you are visiting a hot climate, probably the first thing to add to the list is sunscreen lotion, as running the risk of getting sunstroke or severe sunburn can give you a serious medical condition. People from Western European countries are not normally used to the high temperatures found in places such as Asia, Africa, Australia and South America, so a high factor lotion is the most recommended. Rehydration sachets are another good item to carry if you are visiting warm climates.
Painkillers will be another must-pack item, as not only will most countries not supply the brands you will be used to at home, but many people can react badly to medicines they have not taken before, and you are best to stick to something that is known to work well for you.
Of course, the level of hygiene is never as reliable in poorer countries as it is in the western world, and it is highly recommended that you are prepared for less-than sanitary conditions. Packing sterile dressings, anti-bacterial hand wash and toilet roll will ensure that any germs will be kept at bay.
