Similar to voluntary work, taking part in extra-curricular activities will be a good addition to your future CV. Not only will it improve your job prospects, it will also help you to make new friends, learn new skills and fill your spare time productively.
There are many different opportunities available to young people at college and university. Within most higher education establishments there are student newspapers or radio stations that are run by the students. If you have an interest in the media, or you just want to learn something new, why not get involved, There are various societies within universities that students join. Areas are as diverse as circus skills or windsurfing.
If you are interested in sports you will also find a lot of opportunities to try out various activities. Most colleges and universities have sports teams, such as rugby, football and hockey. Students are encouraged to take part for the obvious health reasons, as well it giving them the opportunity for personal development outside of the classroom.
Taking part in any extra-curricular activity will allow you to develop skills in team building and self-confidence. Speak with other students or your higher education provider to see what is available to you. If you cannot find something suitable, why not find others who have similar interests and start your own team or society. You may be able to apply for funding from your college or university to get you started.
