I love “feel good” movies and sometimes these films are faith-based. I don’t care what their origins are, I just like a movie that leaves me feeling a renewed sense of purpose when the closing credits begin to roll. Facing Giants is one such movie.
Facing Giants is an inspirational drama that combines the world of high school football with faith. It’s the story of Coach Grant Taylor who is faced with a life that is falling apart. He’s leading a team that seems to rack up nothing but losses, is at risk for losing his job, and in the middle of a marriage that is rapidly failing. He’s trying to keep all of these balls in the air, and hoping that he doesn’t drop any. Finally, things become too much for him and he decides to quit trying to do it all on his own. In a tearful late night scene, he falls to his knees and turns everything over to God. Hopefully he can straighten out the mess Taylor has made of his life.
Once he unburdens himself on his creator, things take a decidedly different course in Taylor’s life. He is able to rise above his previous failures and create a winning spirit in the team he coaches. They begin, amazingly, to win games. Taylor too begins to see a renewed purpose in his own life, one that may very well be far removed from football. But, if that’s where God is leading him, Taylor is only too happy to follow.
To make a long story short, and hopefully without spoiling this movie for others who may want to see it, Taylor finds what he is looking for, but only after he has given up seeking it – which is often the case for many of us, religious or not.
