All nurses seeking registration for contract work in the UK must take the International English Language Testing System exam, even if English is their native language. Applicants must achieve a minimum score of 7.0 in reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. The candidate’s number and score from the IELTS must accompany an application to the Nursing and Midwifery Council. When NMC accepts an application, they send will send you a decision letter. NMC requires nurses to take the Overseas Nurses Programme before they can register to work as a nurse in the UK. Anyone who does not pass the ONP at the first attempt can take it a second time.
The Overseas Nurses Programme is a course to teach nurses about the healthcare system in the UK. Some nurses must take 20 hours of supervised practice, following the ONP and only those who successfully pass the course are able to complete their registration.
