Also known as fructarians, this diet is a close relative of the vegan diet, with proponents only consuming the seeds, fruits, nuts, and other plant parts that can be harvested without hurting the plant. Many fruitarians tend to choose this diet for ethical reasons, and are against destroying a plant in order to eat it although the clinical definition of what a fruit is appears to vary wildly. Some fruitarians believe that this was the diet followed by Adam and Eve in biblical times and follow this diet due to religious reasons. Still others embrace a fruitarian diet for weight loss since it is theorised that this type of diet increases the speed of calorie consumption which helps participants lose weight more quickly.
Fruitarians consume predominantly fruit, but nuts are generally acceptable as well. Pasta and grains as well as organic eggs are eaten by some fruitarians in order to help with protein and promote a more balanced diet. While there is no hard and fast definition, many people define themselves as fruitarians if 75% or more of their diet consists of fruit.
A fruitarian diet tends to be quite restrictive and the medical community has many concerns as to the nutritional adequacies of these types of diets since they tend to be low in calcium, protein, Vitamin D, and many other important nutrients. For children, the lack of fatty acids and protein can put their health at serious risk, and some children have died as a result of a poorly managed fruitarian diet. It is hard to stick to a diet this restrictive on a long-term basis, and adherents often end up frustrated as well as prone to some chronic health conditions.
