Gap year in Guatemala

Known as the centre of the ancient Mayan civilisation, Guatemala is a destination that can appeal to every type of traveller. Stunning and adventurous scenery, thriving culture, and, of course, exciting history are all waiting to be discovered here.

Guatemala is located just south of Mexico and has a population of 14 million, with 2.5 million living in the capital, Guatemala City. The rugged landscape of the country is ideal for thrill seekers, as it is filled with vast mountains, rain forests and powerful rivers. This corner of South America is also a volcanic hotspot, boasting the tallest peak in the continent, the Volcán Tajumulco. Elsewhere, boat tours on the famous Usumacinta River are a great way to experience South American nature and wildlife.

There is a vast range of volunteering opportunities in Guatemala, and no matter what area you are interested in there is sure to be something that suitable. Building houses for the homeless and helping local communities are among the most popular choices, but also worth considering are the animal conservation projects that can be found in the rain forests. It is also possible to combine your volunteering with Spanish language classes.
Accommodation will be very basic, even in Guatemala City, unless of course you pay big money for a hotel. However, it will be easier to stay within your budget if you go for more something more basic. Eating out and transport will also prove to be cheaper than other South American countries.
