GCSE Choices – Citizenship

Citizenship is a recent course that was created during a recent government initiative. It was their concern that young people today are receiving a formal education in a range of subjects but at no point being taught how to be a member of society. In the past it was just taken for granted that life skills were learnt at home and at youth or church organisations, but in this day and age it was felt that by omitting to teach life skills to young people we were contributing to the problems of antisocial behaviour, from minor offences such as dropping litter to very serious issues such as murder.

For these reasons it is now a compulsory part of education, and you will more than likely find that you have to take this as part of your GCSE course. Again the course has been designed to try and appeal to young people whilst making them think about how to be part of society, why we need to be held accountable for our actions and why it is vital we look after the older generation and set a positive example to the younger generation.

Depending on which examination board your school is using, there will be an element of coursework and in all cases there will be an examination based around many of the key themes of the world, politics, finance, famine and hunger and asylum seekers and why we need to be aware of and involved in these issues.
