GSCE Mathematics is a core subject, and is therefore compulsory for all students in all schools at all levels. You have no choice but to take this as a GCSE. It is a good life skill and no matter what job you look for, many prospective employers will look for a good basic standard in Mathematics, (usually grade ‘C’ or above).
If you know that you cannot possible achieve that – don’t worry, just try your best; some areas may appeal to you more, and you’ll have a chance to pick up your grade with these favourite subjects.
Mathematics at GCSE level is made up of six key components, and you will be required to sit an examination and do a certain amount of coursework where you get to be creative with a challenge set by the exam board. The six components are Statistics and Probability, Number, Algebra, Graphs, Trigonometry and Shape and Space, all of which will be taught over the two year GCSE course. Lots of studying and revision will help you to understand them as best as you can before the dreaded exam.
Mathematics is taught in ability sets, and you may be entered for the lower paper which limits the highest grade you can get, but takes into account that you do not find Maths easy and means you get a slightly differentiated paper. Your teachers will decide which paper is best for you, so be guided by them, and do your best!
