General Rabbit Care

Taking care of your pet rabbit is an important responsibility that must be fulfilled. Your pet counts on you to maintain his health and vitality. This begins with proper care and nutrition. Only feed your rabbit the appropriate foods such as rabbit pellets, fruits and vegetables. Make sure that your rabbit has fresh water at all hours of the day. Keep an eye on food dishes and top them up when they get low.

You must clean the cage or hutch that your rabbit lives in quite often. It doesn’t take long for waste to pile up and create a nasty smell. It’s unpleasant and can also be harmful to your pet. Clean their cage on a regular basis, as soon as it becomes noticeably filthy. Use soft wood chips to line their cage for bedding. Kitty litter can also be used in their bathroom area for better absorption.

Rabbits should receive their first vaccinations at the age of six weeks. This vaccination is for such illnesses as viral haemorrhagic disease and myxomatosis. They should receive a vaccination and a trip to the vet every year after that. If your rabbit seems to be ill, take him to the vet right away. Rabbits can grow sick very quickly.

Play with your rabbit and be sure to spend time with him. Rabbits enjoy the company of others so make him part of the family with attention and love. A neglected rabbit could become lonely and depressed so pay attention to your furry friend to keep him in optimum health.
