Greek Weddings, One of Life’s Pleasures

Celebrations in Greece are exuberant, entertaining and always include a great deal of food and drink. Weddings are no exception. In a traditional Greek Orthodox marriage, the celebrations start with the formal engagement and carry on until the reception. Why not, After all, life is to be enjoyed.

Diamonds are the stone of choice for engagement or wedding rings. In ancient times these fiery stones were symbols of passion thought to have come directly from the Gods. Greek brides also wore brightly coloured veils to protect them from evil spirits. Sometimes this tradition is still followed.

The groom must ask the bride’s father for her hand in marriage on the day of the wedding. The best man then takes charge. He makes sure they get to the church for the ceremony. The couple each wear a gold crown or a wreath of orange blossoms. The best man is responsible for seeing these are in place and that the ribbon that connects the headpieces is held fast. In Greece, the bride and groom are treated as king and queen for their special day.

It is at the wedding reception that the fun loving nature of the Greek people comes out in all its glory. Sometimes these huge parties can last until dawn, maybe even longer. The departure of the happy couple is no signal for the party to end. Food and drink are plentiful. Money is tossed at the musicians and dishes are smashed to bring good luck. The music and dancing goes on until the last guest leaves. The highlight is when the guests gather to do the Greek circle dance.
