How to survive away from home for the first time

Moving away from home for the first time can be a daunting experience. You won’t know anyone, you will be in an unfamiliar city, and you will be in a new home. The good news is that almost every other person you meet will be in the same boat as you. Nobody can be blamed for feeling apprehensive about the situation, but the more friends you make the easier and more fun you are going to have.

Make sure you go to university prepared. You may have applied for your student loan early, but there are no guarantees that it will come on time. Save up a bit of cash as a backup just in case.

Orientate yourself with the local facilities. Get out and find where your nearest supermarket, bank and other amenities are. Share the information with others; it’s an excellent conversation starter and your new friends may have found somewhere closer.

Arrange with your new friends a rota for cleaning. It may seem irrelevant at this time, but a lot of people can fall out over this. A clean home is a happy home – you don’t want to be treading over other peoples mess every day, same as they do not want to tread over yours.
Finally, make sure that you keep safe. It can seem like a good idea to go out and drink as much as possible during the fresher events. However, try to keep an eye on each other and don’t walk home alone in the dark.
