Keeping Fish: A Guide to Start your Fish-Keeping Hobby

There is more to the fish-keeping hobby, than one goldfish and a fish bowl. Although it’s an easy hobby, starting this also entails a systematised process. Just like any other activity or chore, the hardest part is getting started. With this in mind, it’s better to do things slowly but surely. To start and succeed in this hobby, the keeper only needs to learn and do some important things.

The first thing to do is gain some information. It is always better to have some knowledge on something before engaging in it. Spend a day or two researching and make sure to focus on important information. It is also advisable to think and imagine what kind of fishes and aquarium you would like to have. In this way, buying will not be such a hard task at all.

The next thing to do is very easy and exciting, although here’s the catch (excuse the pun!): be careful of overspending. For a freshwater aquarium, the basic things to be bought include a heater, a lighted hood, the plants, substrate, the airstones and the decoration. After that, you can already fix everything up and buy your fish. To avoid overspending, you should first compare prices between different stores, and maybe, opt to do a little bargaining. Also, remember that if you want to have more than just one fish – the desirable number would be five to six – you should get advice as to exactly what equipment you need and how much. Now it’s all done. However, it doesn’t stop there – don’t forget to feed the fish every day and to take care of them.
