Improving own learning and performance is somewhat of a clumsy course title. However, the basis behind it is quite simple; the government feel that in order to be able to function well in society it is important that you have the skills required to self develop, whether that is learning to be a better learner or learning to give a better more honed performance.
It is seen as one of the wider skills, which means it’s not subject specific like learning better English skills or developing a better understanding of mathematics. Learning and performance skills are designed to help you overall as a person. In particular this course asks you to learn to take responsibility for your own learning and concentrate on how to manage the way you learn, which involves things like setting yourself goals and targets and prioritising your work. This will be a key part of your revision process and will help you in many ways in all of your subjects.
It also teaches you how to work with people in a way that benefits you both, and what the key criteria for finding your perfect work partner are. Finally, it helps you become self critical, which is a good skill to develop, as it is important that you can look back at what you have done before and see where you may have gone wrong and what you can do to improve you future performance. Again the portfolio and test apply.
