Key Skills – Information and Communication Technology.

One of a group of six key skills that the education system wants all students to have before they leave school is Information and Communication Technology. It is available in four NVQ levels and is primarily designed for those students who do not find these skills easy to learn and would benefit more from learning this skill than spending hours trying to learn a foreign language, for example.

If you choose to take this key skill you will need to be able to demonstrate that you can ‘use IT for finding, exploring, developing and presenting information (text, images and numbers)’. This sounds good, but what does this actually mean, Well in basic terms this means that you have to be able to demonstrate that you can use certain applications such as spreadsheets and word processors, you understand the difference between the two and how you would choose which one is the more appropriate application for what you need to achieve. There is a section that looks at using a computer safely, backing up and storing your work, understanding viruses and how to prevent them by protecting your computer properly, and looking at health and safety of computers in bigger industries.

Finally there are two modules on films and theme parks that give you the chance to use IT in a more creative way. As is common with key skills, you must build a portfolio of work and sit a test at the end of the course.
