Reunions can be messy, but do they ever get this bad, No, never. That makes you wonder why the film was thought up in the first place, and why an eclectic range of actors from Sissy Spacek, Rebecca Romjin and Dave Matthews (in a drug dealer role this time) chose to be in it.
Maggie (Spacek) is a self-sufficient, stolid, farmer in Virginia. Tired out by it all, she is planning to sell the place and leave town. Then one day, her son Billy (Troy Garity) shows up, apparently because he is taking a break from playing in a rock band. A young boy, Clayton (played by Colin Ford) is with him.
In the middle of Maggie’s austere life and the full, hearty meals that she serves this duo, an old family tragedy crops up. A guilty secret that is still taking a toll on Maggie’s conscience is raked up, willy nilly, and, that sets the tone for the future of this little family. As it turns out, Clayton may or may not be Billy’s son.
The drama that follows is slightly tortured, and the plot is not exactly super strong either. But wait. Not all is lost. There is some really strong acting going on here. And maybe, just maybe the ultimate resolution to this family’s drama, that engulfs all the key players, will also restore some faith in the American way of life.
In all, this is a movie with it all. There’s drugs, drug money, Clayton’s mother turning up, and of course, guns. It isn’t the most exciting thing that’s cropped up from the box office this year, but it will definitely do.
