The Majestic Tree Hound is a coon hound of recent origin. It was developed by Lee Newhart and others in the mid 20th century and was registered in 1980.
The Majestic was derived from big game breeds, such as HYPERLINK “http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talbot_(dog)” o “Talbot (dog)”Talbots, St. Hubert Hounds, and Bloodhounds, which had been bred in America for many years. These were bred with other Western game hounds, including descendants of ancestral breeds like the Blue Gascon Old Line dogs and the early HYPERLINK “http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porcelaine” o “Porcelaine”Porcelaines brought into the US by the Rousseau Family.
The dog was developed for cold-trailing work as a way to save the big, cold-nosed American Working Hounds from extinction. The Majestic’s closest relative is the Bloodhound, which it closely resembles.
The Majestic is a very large breed with the males weighing 45kg (100 pounds) or more. They are bred to hunt large game, such as bear, bobcat, lions and jaguar. In their homeland, they make excellent coonhounds, having inherited the voice and persistence of their Bloodhound and American Blue Gascon cousins. The dog has an excellent sense of smell and a loud bray.
The dogs are heavily wrinkled with a pronounced dewlap. The head has an excess of skin around the eyes with long, low-set ears. The breed has a noble and statuesque bearing. On the trail, however, it is a tenacious hunter, following trails that are hours or even day’s old and are totally devoted to the task in hand.
The Majestic breed makes a good companion and house dog. However, they are inclined to drool excessively and are prone to skin and eye ailments.
