Mother’s Blog: Tips Before Returning to Work

Being a mum is the most satisfactory and rewarding period in any woman’s life. However, time comes when your “mummy life” ends, and your own career becomes the priority. Although you’ll come across a few bumps, careful planning can prepare you for these new roles. These few tips will make going back to work less stressful.

Enjoy your maternity leave. Rest, unwind and focus on being a mother. The early weeks are very important to establish milk supply and to bond with your baby. Look for a responsible childcare centre that supports breastfeeding mums. If you plan to continue breastfeeding by the time you go back to work, ask your boss for a private room for pumping. If you’re planning to use a bottle, introduce the bottle to your baby two to three weeks before you return to work. Confirm your plans with your employer. Clarify your job schedule and duties so you’ll know your obligations. Don’t push yourself. Schedule your return to work gradually. Start working part time and slowly return to full time. Practise your new roles. It will take a while to balance your new routine. Lastly, always ask your doctor’s advice.

Regardless of how thoroughly you’ve considered your decision to return to work, and how you’re sure that it’s the right choice, you have to prepare yourself for mixed emotions. Returning to work creates emotional conflicts for a mum. But working doesn’t make you a bad one, and its okay to look forward to new interactions and the challenges of your job. Remember that you’re doing what’s best to your family.
