Myths of Smoking Cessation

As is the case with any program, smoking cessation has myths that may deter some smokers from quitting. While some of the myths may be true, most of the time they are not.
Cessation Products are a Foolproof Method of Quitting
Because smoking cessation programs that use stop smoking products are not foolproof, many people who participate in the program will relapse. There is no method of smoking cessation that will work in every case.
The Use of Smoking Cessation Products Increases Relapses
Some people mistakenly believe that smoking cessation products, such as the nicotine patch, nicotine replacement gum, lozenges or inhalers, must be used constantly after giving up cigarettes. This is false. While these products can be used indefinitely, the user can slowly wean him off of the products much more easily than he could wean himself off of cigarettes.
Moodiness is Inevitable
Smokers who are quitting may have mood swings. However, not everyone who quits will have them, especially if the smoker is using cessation products to quit. Friends and family members can help to alleviate the moodiness by keeping stress levels down and understanding that the smoker may be slightly more irritable than normal.
Weight Gain during Cessation
Many people equate smoking cessation with weight gain. However, with careful planning, the smoker can stay the same weight or actually lose weight during the cessation program. Using a weekly, or even a daily, meal planning system is the key to maintaining weight during the program. Staying hydrated is important, too.
