Norfolk Terrier – Dog Breed Information and Pictures

Norfolk Terriers were first a part of the Norwich terrier dog breed. Since there are some differences between the breeds, Norfolk Terriers became their own official breed in 1960. Norfolk Terriers originate from Great Britain and have been used as working terriers for hundreds of years. Originally, they were used as a working dog to help hunt out small vermin such as rats and mice from barns. Although they aren’t used for this as much these days, they still have a tendency to fight any vermin they see.

The Norfolk Terrier is considered the smallest of the working terriers. They average a weight of 5 kilogrammes. Their height ranges from 25 to 30 centimetres on average. They can have several different coat colours including red, black, tan and wheat. Their hair is medium length and consists of a warm undercoat and a wiry, harsh topcoat. They require regular grooming in order to keep their coat from becoming matted. Brushing them once each week should suffice.

Since they are friendly and active, they are not considered a toy breed, although they do make good companions. Norfolk Terriers are very vocal and will bark on a regular basis. When other animals are introduced when the Terrier is a puppy, they tend to do very well with other family pets. They also work well with children. Norfolk Terriers are a social dog breed and need regular interaction with humans. They feel that they are being punished if they are left alone for extended periods of time.
