The Norwegian Elkhound is best known for its hunting capabilities. It is such a popular dog in Norway that it has become the official dog of the country. It is known by many names. For instance, native Norwegians call it the Norsk Elghund, which is a direct translation of Norwegian Elkhound. Beyond that, they are also known as the Small Grey Elk Dog and the Norwegian Moose Dog.
While the Norwegian Elkhound can hunt just about anything, they are named for their ability to hunt moose. While they are much smaller than the average sized moose, they use stealth techniques and loud barking to help hunters catch their prey. The Norwegian Elkhound will use its sense of smell to find a moose, then run at it to help corner it out of fear. Once the moose is cornered, the dog will bark continuously with their notably loud bark. This is a cue for the hunters to come and do away with the moose. In this way, the Norwegian Elkhound is a very effective hunter.
Norwegian Elkhounds are a small to average sized breed of dog. Their height ranges from 46 to 53 centimetres on average while their weight stays between 18 and 27 kilograms. They have pointed erect ears and a tail that curls back on the hips.
By looks, the Norwegian Elkhound resembles a wolf, although they are friendlier than that. They are very loyal to their owner and they make a good family dog. If they are treated well and with respect, they will rarely misbehave.
