The Old English Sheepdog has a colourful and mysterious past. While there have been paintings of dogs resembling the Old English Sheepdog as far back as the mid-eighteenth century, they are thought to be even older than that. There is some speculation as to the ancestry of the dog. While it can never be known for sure, experts suspect that the Russian Owtchar and the Bearded Collie are some of the Old English Sheepdog’s ancestors.
Above all else, the Old English Sheepdog is best known for its looks. It has very distinctive features that have even made the dog’s likeness a mascot for various company products. The Old English Sheepdog has a long double coat. Its fur is especially long around the eyes and face of the dog, which often obscures its vision. While there are plenty of dog breeds that have long hair, few have that same long hair on their face. For this reason, the Old English Sheepdog is something special.
The Old English Sheepdog is a large dog breed. As far as height goes, these sheepdogs average a minimum of 56 centimetres for females and 61 centimetres for males. Females average a weight between 30 and 40 kilograms while males average between 36 and 46 kilograms.
Old English Sheepdogs make a very popular pet. They are easy going and friendly not just to the family, but to outsiders as well. They are laid back and can often become lazy. Since they have a natural herding ability, they may even try herding your family when playing outside.
