Patterdale Terrier – Dog Breed Information and Pictures

The Patterdale Terrier, also known as the Fell Terrier or the Coloured Terrier, originated in England. Although they can make a great companion for nearly any owner, they are most often used as a working dog and have been used for hunting for many years. In England, they are used mostly for hunting foxes while in America, they are used for hunting groundhogs, raccoons and badgers. Farmers also use these dogs to help keep barn rodents at bay.

The most common coat colour for the Patterdale Terrier is smooth and black, although this wasn’t always the case. In the beginning of the breed, they were often referred to as a Black and Tan Terrier because this was the most common colouring at the time. Now they can be nearly any colour, including red and chocolate. Since the breed varies so much and doesn’t have a clear lineage or ancestry, the Patterdale Terrier has not been accepted into the UK Kennel Club.

The Patterdale Terrier is a small dog weighing in at around 5 kilograms on average. They have a long stature for their size, and they can be between 25 and 30 centimetres tall. The size of the dog varies greatly based on what kind of working dog the owner wants. The bigger the prey, the bigger the Patterdale Terrier should be.

While Patterdale Terriers can make very good, social pets, they shouldn’t live with other animals. Their hunting instinct is too great and other pets, such as cats and rabbits, may get hurt.
