The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is named as such because they are said to have come from Pembrokeshire in Wales. They are of the Welsh Corgi dog breed along with the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is the more popular of the two breeds. They were made infinitely more popular in recent years because they are the favoured pet of the current Queen of England, Elizabeth II. While she indeed made the dog more popular, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi has actually been a dog of royalty for over 70 years. They also happen to be the smallest herding dog breed currently in existence.
Pembroke Welsh Corgis are very small. In fact, they have very short legs, although they do have a long body. They have much different proportions than most other dogs. They have an average height between of 25 and 38 centimetres, with female Pembroke Welsh Corgis usually being at the lower end of the average. They also average a weight of around 12 kilograms for the average male Pembroke Welsh Corgi, and 10 kilograms for females. Unlike the Cardigan Welsh Corgi, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi has a white band of fur encircling their neck. This is often called a ‘fairy saddle’. The rest of their coat can be a variety of colours. They can be fawn, red or sable. They also often have tricoloured markings and continue the white fur on the legs, chest and face of the dog, as well as the belly.
