The Perro de Presa Canario dog breed goes by many names. Its name can be literally translated from Spanish to mean Canarian Catch Dogs. They also go by Presa Canario, Canarian Dog, Canary Mastiff and Dogo Canario. They get their name partially from their origin as they are from the Canary Islands of Spain. While it is not known exactly when they were first bred, or who their ancestors are, they have been around since at least the eighteenth century.
Perro de Pres Canarios make good guard dogs. They are more than happy to protect the property and its family. This is their main use for owners today, although they once had the job of a dog fighter. On the Canary Islands in the nineteenth century, dog fighting was a very popular blood sport that was seen as an honourable practice by some natives. When dog fighting was banned in the mid-1900s, the Perro de Pres Canarios lost a lot of popularity and almost became extinct. Luckily, dedicated breeders helped re-establish the breed in the 1970s and they are now no longer in danger of becoming extinct.
Because of their stubborn nature, Perro de Pres Canario dogs can be very difficult to train. They need constant supervision while they are puppies. Unless they are trained on a daily basis, they can become unruly. They often disregard their owner’s wishes and demands because of this. If trained right though, they can be very loyal and respectful dogs.
