The Peruvian Hairless Dog is also known as the Inca Hairless Dog and has been around for thousands of years. It was first depicted in Peruvian statues and sculptures as early as 750 AD. While this ancient breed is special for its heritage, it is even more special based on the way it looks. The Peruvian Hairless Dog is one of very few hairless dog breeds. While the Peruvian Hairless dog can actually have a full coat, this is rare and disqualifies the dog from any competitions. Instead, most owners often prefer their dog to be completely hairless. Most competitions will only allow some fur on the dog’s head, tail and feet, though.
Rather than judging this dog by its coat colour, those looking to own a Peruvian Hairless Dog look to its skin colour instead. Most dogs of this breed have chocolate coloured skin, although it can also be grey, copper or mottled. Some Peruvian Hairless Dogs have spots of white on their faces, feet and legs.
Peruvian Hairless Dogs vary greatly when it comes to size. They are typically put into categories of small, medium and large. A large Peruvian Hairless Dog can be between 50 and 65 centimetres tall while a small one can be between 25 and 40 centimetres tall. The weight can also vary greatly between dogs, from 4 to 25 kilograms. While Peruvian Hairless Dogs can be friendly to both humans and other animals, they are often very wary of strangers.
