The Petit Bleu de Gascogne is a scent hound that originated in France and is typically used in pack hunting. It is a descendant of a very old breed long embraced for its excellent hunting abilities.
A misleading factor, the word “Petit” in the name of this dog, suggests that the canine is small in size, but that is not the case. The nomenclature is due to the fact that the breed specializes in hunting small game, such as hare and fox, as opposed to the Grand Bleu de Gascogne, which is used to hunt large game like bear and boar.
The only difference between the Grand and the Petit Bleu de Gascogne is that the size is slightly different. The bones are not as large, and the animal is very well proportioned. Like the Grand Bleu de Gascogne, it is not as fast as other types of dogs. It prefers to take its time hunting and then systematically executing the result.
The Petit Bleu de Gascogne also has a muscular body. It has the same sort of coat. It is short and dense with a mottled colouring of black and white, which makes it appear to have a blue colour.
This breed has a desirable temperament and can make a wonderful companion. The Petit Bleu de Gascogne is confident in its abilities, has high levels of stamina and endurance, and their focussing and scenting capabilities is also valuable. This combination of assets makes this dog a tremendous and most efficient hunter.
