While the Podenco Galego is an ancient breed in existence for many centuries, it did not become a breed standard until very recently. Up until now, the Podenco Galego, also known as the Podengo Galego or the Galician Warren Dog, was used primarily as a rabbit hunter. It lives in the Galician region of Spain and was aptly named after this area. Although its true history remains a mystery, most breeders and historians believe that the Podenco Galego is a descendent of the Egyptian dog breeds brought to the Mediterranean thousands of years ago.
The Podenco Galego dog breed is used most often in hunting. They are referred to as sight hounds because they hunt by catching the animal in their line of sight. To a lesser extent, the Podenco Galego hunts with its scent and sound abilities as well. While they primarily hunt the infestation of rabbits in Spain, they also hunt foxes and water fowl. They can flush out their prey from hiding places so that the hunter can take aim. They can also retrieve felled animals although this is not their primary ability.
Podenco Galego dogs are medium in size. They have a height that ranges from 42 to 52 centimetres. They weigh between 10 and 15 kilograms on average. Female Podenco Galegos tend to be a bit shorter than the males but maintain a similar weight. Although they can be kept as a family pet, the Podenco Galego dog breed is most often used for hunting.
