The Pointer is also known as the English Pointer and the breed originates from England. This is a very old breed. It gets its name from the pointing abilities it has whilst hunting. When out on the hunt, the Pointer dog breed will see a bird or small animal and stiffen its body, pointing out the animal with its head. This is an indication for the hunter so he knows where to find his prey. While Pointers are good at hunting, they can also make a good companion and can often be found in non-hunting homes.
Coat colour for the Pointer varies between liver, black or lemon and a large patch of white. They have a short, coarse coat that does not require a lot of grooming. Pointers are a medium breed with females being a bit smaller than males. Their weight ranges from 20 to 34 kilograms whilst their height ranges from 58 to 70 centimetres. They have strong, sleek, and lean bodies without a lot of fat or loose skin. They have floppy ears and medium-length tails.
Pointers need a lot of exercise on a daily basis. They like to spend time in large yards where they can run around and play fetch. Although they need this outdoor interaction to stay healthy, they prefer to live inside the house when not exercising. They will snuggle up with their owners. Pointers are very friendly and considered to be well-behaved. They co-habitat well with children, other dogs, and even some cats.
