The Polish Hound is an indigenous breed of Poland. While it has been living in Poland for hundreds of years, some historians speculate that the breed is a descendent of some German and Austrian breeds. Regardless, the Polish Hound has been used as a hunting dog in Poland for quite some time. It can now be found in other European countries as well as the United States although they are rare in these areas.
Since they have a fantastic sense of smell and high levels of endurance, Polish Hounds are most often used as hunting dogs. They are called hounds because of their sense of smell. In order to find their prey, they smell them and then flush them out of their hiding places. Once flushed out, the hunter can then dispatch the animal. Polish Hounds can be taken on extended hunting trips because they have a lot of stamina and endurance. While they are not considered to be as fast as some other hunting dogs, they make up for it with their hunt longevity as they can be out hunting for long hours before getting tired.
The Polish Hound is a medium-size dog breed. For height, it averages between 55 and 65 centimetres. They also weigh between 20 and 32 kilograms. The female Polish Hounds are slightly smaller than the male ones. Polish Hounds have long, floppy ears and a long tail. They have a medium, thick coat that can be fawn, black, or tan in colour.
