You will often hear of the range of diseases that are spread in countries with hot climates. These are mainly caused by insects – carriers of the disease that infect humans. Preparing for insect bites is one of the best ways to ensure that you will not run into any health problems while abroad.
Mosquitoes causing the spread of Malaria are perhaps the most well known example. Fortunately, there are a variety of ways to combat mosquito bites, such as repellent lotion, protective nets and sprays. These tiny insects also carry diseases such as yellow fever, Japanese encephalitis and dengue fever and are usually found in hot environments where there is a presence of carbon dioxide and movement – i.e. where a person is breathing.
Insect repellent is probably the most common choice for most travellers, but it is important that you choose the right one to suit your requirements. It is often advised to apply the repellent several times a day at the very least and to avoid contact with broken skin, mouth and eyes. If you go swimming in between applications of the repellent, it will need to be reapplied again.
Clothing is also an important factor when it comes to avoiding insect bites. It is recommended to wear loose clothing, as some insects are able to bite through tight-fitted garments. Also worth considering is treating your cloths with permethrin – a substance that can be sprayed onto fabrics and which repels insects. If you find yourself walking through any densely wooded areas, tucking your trousers into your socks will help you to avoid ticks.
