The Pungsan Dog breed, also known as the Poongsan Dog, originates from North Korea. While these dogs can also be found in South Korea and in the United States, this is rare. They are almost exclusively found in their country of origin. The exact history of the Pungsan Dog is unknown, although breed loyalists believe that they descend from wild wolves in the mountain regions of North Korea. This is due to the appearance of the Pungsan Dog as well as their musculature and adeptness at climbing mountains. The Pungsan Dog is named as such because it was first bred in the Pungsan mountain region of North Korea, although they have spread throughout the country over the years.
At first glance, Pungsan Dogs resemble wolves. They have tall, pricked ears and a curly tail that folds onto the dog’s back. They are strong and muscular as well and the cost is usually white or cream in colour, although there are no breed standards for this. Their coat is thick and silky with a tough undercoat. This keeps the dog warm when they are in the North Korean mountains.
Although Pungsan Dogs are often used for hunting large animals, like tigers, they also make fine companions. They have a lot of energy and need to be exercised on a daily basis. They also love to bite and chew, and Pungsan Dog puppies are especially rambunctious in this way.
