Recovery



Almost all the women get cramps just like the cramps during menstrual periods, soon after the Dilatation and curettage surgery. This you can be overcome by consuming a painkiller like an ibuprofen or paracetamol. This can be easily obtained. If incase you cannot get hold of one, take the required prescription from your Doctor.
There is also a possibility of vaginal bleeding in some, it is seen as bright red color in the beginning and later turns to brown while fading. Sanitary towels are prescribed instead of tampons, to regulate the bleeding. Tampons should be completely avoided until you get your next menstrual cycle period. On an average the bleeding passes within5-10 days. Sexual intercourse is not advisable during this course as it can cause complications.
It’s advisable that you are always in company of friends, relatives colleagues or partner to be with you. This arrangement should be made at least for the next 24 hours after the surgery. As you still might be feeling discomfort or be in a state of unconsciousness due to general anesthesia. Make sure you do not drive home, use or operate heavy machinery for atleast 24 hours after the procedure. You can return to work in about two to three days time.
Incase you have undergone the D&C for diagnostic purpose; you shall receive the laboratory test within fourteen days. You shall be intimated about the results with written communication and you also can discuss with the hospital staff your further course of action.
Risks
Risk of any kind of Infection
All the precautionary measures are taken by the hospital staff as well as Doctors for no infection after the procedure but there can be a chance wherein you can get one. Infection symptoms post operation includes; fever, discharge from vagina which can be foul smelling and abdominal pain. If these symptoms are noticed, you are advised to take medical advice as soon as possible. By consuming antibiotics this can be treated immediately
Risk of bleeding heavy
This can be a very rare complication caused by this particular procedure. If there are any injuries to uterus especially the wall with the instrument used in the procedures or a fibroid is undetected and gets cut during the procedure. You are advised to contact the hospital management or staff if the bleeding continuous after the procedure and continues to be a very heavy flow and does not even reduce after the first seen days of the procedure.

Asherman’s syndrome
When the uterus is severely damaged this can also result as scarring. This syndrome is called Asherman’s syndrome. This scar disrupts periods and also can causes infertility in certain cases. The Asherman’s syndrome occurs in less than 2% of patients undergone D&Cs. This can be treated successfully removing scars surgically. This syndrome can very often go unnoticed as a cause of infertility. Incase you experiencing any problems related to fertility and also have undergone a D&C procedure in the past, you are advised to consult the possibility of having a better situation with your Gynecologist or General Practitioner.
