Redbone Coonhounds, also known as Reds for short, are very accomplished hunting dogs. It uses its keen sense of smell to find its prey. They can detect the smell of a fox deep in a wooded area, and will follow the scent for long distances. Once the Redbone Coonhound gets near the fox, it will howl. This is their way of telling their hunting owner where to find the prey. They are also adept at hunting other animals such as raccoons and beavers.
The Redbone Coonhound is an American dog breed. It was created by mating several different European coonhound breeds that had been brought to the United States in the 18th Century.
Redbone Coonhounds are a medium to large sized dog breed and usually russet in colour. They have an average height between 56 and 69 centimetres and weigh between 20 and 32 kilograms. Females are usually slightly shorter than the males and also lighter, with finer and more slender bones.
Although they make a great hunting partner, Redbone Coonhounds also make a good family companion. They love to spend time with their family but as they can grow rather large and sometimes be over-enthusiastic in their affections, they do need good discipline. Since they are so social, it is unwise to keep Redbone Coonhounds alone or in locked quarters for long periods of time. This can alter their behaviour and temperament, ultimately leading to an unhappy dog.
