As per a study in the science, a person can manage with one kidney only. Renal transplant is also known as Kidney transplant in which the kidney of the healthy person gets transplanted into the patient. The person who is donating his kidney is named as donor. Sometimes, the kidneys may not be available for the patients. The search for the donors is done in blood relatives primarily. The patient may need to take lot of medicines so that new kidney gets adjusted. With the new kidney in place, patient can continue to lead a normal life but may have to suffer side effects for sometime.
Why is it necessary
It is necessary as the kidney of the patient wears out and it could pose danger to the patient’s life. Then a transplant may be needed. Patient needs to go through rigorous treatment like dialysis as well as doctors imposed restrictions on the food habits of the person.
Why it should be done
Doctor provides temporary treatment to the person with dialysis. But dialysis is very painful to the person. Doctors prefer to go with the Kidney transplant as it helps the person live longer. The main cause for kidney failure is diabetes. Also uncontrolled blood pressure is one of the other reasons as well.
When it should be done
Doctors face problem in case donor is not available. In case, living donor is available then it’s easy for the doctor to go ahead with the patient’s kidney transplant. In case, suitable donor is not available, then the doctor would recommend a dialysis procedure to continue funnelling the blood.
How is it performed
At the time of transplant, they will make a longer cut and shift the transplanted kidney on the lower abdomen via a cut towards the one which needs to be removed. After the procedure, the transplanted kidney would require proper blood supply as well as connection with the bladder to pass out the urine. To do this, doctor attaches the artery and vein of the transplanted kidney to the main artery and vein of the leg. The tube which carries urine from the kidney to the bladder gets directly connected with the main bladder so that urine also passes out from the transplanted kidney. In case of living donor, two teams of doctors carry out the operation so that time and risk involvement will become less.
Preparation
Patient needs to register his name in a medical centre so that the search for a suitable donor can begin. After getting the matching donor, the medical centre directly contacts the patient. Also doctor will do immediate operation as the kidney becomes available. It is advisable that patient does not drink or eat anything, take all the prescribed medicines to the hospital along with some clothes to stay there till the treatment is completed.
Recovery from a Kidney Transplant
Kidney transplant is one of the major operations conducted. Patient would need few days to recover after the surgery. It’s advisable that after 3 months, a regular check up is done by consulting the doctor. Regular blood test will be done to check whether the transplanted kidney is working fine or not. A week’s time will be taken for recovery in case of living donor.
