Respite care

Respite care is referred to something which lets you take a break if you are taking care of someone and acts as a backup or support system for you. There could be a lot of ways to avail the respite care and can be categorized as day centre care, emergency respite care, residential care and domiciliary respite care. These are all different types of respite care useful in different conditions. In domiciliary type, it is a situation where someone takes your place in your home for sometime and does your duties. In case of residential type, the person who needs to be looked after is put into some specific care centre. The day centre care is the typical type where the person whom you need to take care of, spends some time of the day. The emergency respite would be the one where you can call for help in case of some unforeseen condition like sickness.

How to do

There is a proper procedure in place which takes you through work flow of assessing the requirements for the respite care. The local authorities would be the first point of contact in situations of assessing the requirements. They would come in and assess the situation as well as the person whose care needs to be done. There would be a social worker who would be involved in this process to keep a tab on the health related requirements of this person as well as the other requirements related to their routines and emotions. The authorities shall have all the information which can be provided on request. The services come in for a price which would again depend on the assessment and the requirement. They should also be able to explain the minimum amount for providing the services and the part of it, which can be done without anything being paid. There are lot of ways in which the payments can be made for the services, like vouchers and direct cash. The vouchers work like prepaid card and can be exchanged for the services of the community centre.

What are these used for

This type of care can be arranged at home. Normally the idea is that someone would stay back at your place when you want to go out. There could be lot of customization which can be done to the requirement of the care to be taken. One could actually use the home care agencies, any local media for advertising or some personal recommendations like the community group in your area, a doctor whom you trust with a recommendation. Also while engaging someone you should consider the fee and payment agreements, employment status, and ensure the person is trustworthy and has proper experience in what they have to do. After the person is engaged, you would want to keep the protocol clear with this person and make sure that this fellow understands the requirements of the person whose care has to be taken. It would help by drawing a proper list of instructions about the requirements of the person at home, including how to take care of the house and find basic things around, and also emergency contacts in case they want to call in for help.
