Role Models

I loved this movie because it reminded me of how I would have probably acted when I were their age if I were to be in such a position.

This movie is about two “slackers” who get themselves into trouble and in lieu of some serious jail time, they are sentenced to do community service. Only problem is the service they are assigned is the last sort of thing they should be permitted to do – act as mentors for teens. They are assigned to a program called “Sturdy Wings” and they are assigned some troubled young people to mentor.

The idea of the mentoring program is to teach them a lesson or two about taking responsibility, but instead it teaches the administrators of Sturdy Wings that these two characters are probably the last people who should ever be put in charge of kids.

The movie is hysterical because the situations presented are ones that I can actually imagine happening to me in my youth. I too stayed one step ahead of jail and was the beneficiary of programs such as Sturdy Wings myself. Shame I never had mentors like these two, though. Somehow I think they would have been a lot more fun than what I got stuck with.

The movie is not just funny, but contains some high drama as well. The acting is first rate and the dynamics between these two mentors and their young charges shows that there is an excellent chemistry between the actors in this film – something that always makes for better theatre.
