Roman Holiday (1953)

Genre: Romance
Director: William Wyler
Starring Cast: Gregory Peck, Audrey Hepburn, Eddie Albert, Hartley Power

Ann (Hepburn), a very young princess visiting Rome on a goodwill tour, with all its ceremonies, speeches and interviews, suddenly reaches the end of her tether and bolts, just as the de-stressing sedative her doctor gave her takes effect. She wakes up on the sofa of Joe Bradley (Peck), an American journalist who recognizes her. She wants someone to show her some fun, and he wants an exclusive story, so off they set. She gets a haircut, they go on a wild scooter ride through the streets of Rome and they dance on a barge on the Tiber while his paparazzi friend, Irving tries to take pictures. Too soon, she has to decide whether duty to her country comes before freedom and newly kindled love, and he has to discover whether he can put his heart and his honour before his scoop.
Most of the people who saw Hepburn in Roman Holiday were seeing her for the first time. She’d had some very minor roles in mostly minor films, this was the moment when this slender, innocent, impish Gigi of a girl walked elegantly into the centre of the screen. With Peck as her stalwart, manly and honourable escort, the romance of unrequited love reaches its peak in their deliciously bittersweet final moment on screen together.
