The Rough Collie is a type of Collie that originated in Scotland, which is why it is sometimes known as the Scottish Collie. This breed is generally very healthy and sturdy. They are resilient working dogs accustomed to herd and protect livestock.
They are medium-sized to large and this can vary from dog to dog. Usually there are three colours in the coat of the Rough Collie: sable, white and black. The sable colours can vary in shade. In comparison to other collie types of dogs one can immediately tell the differences when the canines are seen side by side. The body of the Rough Collie is strong and powerful. The muzzle is narrow and long. The ears are erect, and some dogs can lay them flat against the head. A famous example of a Rough Collie is ‘Lassie’, the eponymous dog star of the popular television series.
The Rough Collie coat is double layer which is what gives it the thick, fluffy appearance. These dogs can shed considerably and grooming can be a chore. The grooming maintenance is considered light to moderate, however, because although they do need to be brushed they do not require it daily.
The Rough Collie’s temperament is calm and they are neither excessively shy nor aggressive. Overall they are a good natured canine. They are loyal and protective. This breed is very good with families and children; they can often also get along well with other animals.
