The Russell Terrier dog breed, also known as the Jack Russell Terrier, was developed in England by a man named Reverend John Russell. Reverend Russell was very interested in fox hunting, which was popular at the time of the nineteenth century. He wanted to develop a dog like the Show Fox Terrier, but smaller, lighter, and with more stamina. By creating the Russell Terrier, he had a dog that fulfilled all of his requirements for an excellent hunting dog.
While the Russell Terrier is good in several ways when it comes to hunting, it is most adept at hunting animals in confined spaces. Since the dog is typically very small, they can fit through tight spaces in order to advance on their quarry. An average Russell Terrier stands at just 25 to 30 centimetres tall. This, combined with their lightweight and compact frame, makes them the perfect terrier breed for the job.
Though Russell Terriers were initially bred for hunting, they have since become very popular as a family pet. They make fine companions and have a pleasant demeanour. They are quick to please and are happy to spend time with their owners.
Russell Terriers have a medium length coat that can grow unkempt about the face. They are mostly white in colour, though they have either black or tan markings on their face and ears. This colour can also be on their tail or back as well.
