Schnauzer dogs are most noted for the way their face looks. They have a long muzzle that consists of long fur that hangs down from the nose. In fact, the breed name Schnauzer is German for ‘snout’. The breed originates from Germany and was originally bred as a working dog. Unlike other working dogs, the Schnauzer can accomplish multiple tasks. For starters, they are very good at catching rats, mice and other vermin. They were used on farms in order to rid barns and houses of these rodents. Schnauzers are also good at guarding the home. They will protect their home from intruders and strangers. They also like to protect their family, and will bark if they feel threatened.
There are three varieties of the Schnauzer dog breed. The original incarnation of the breed is now referred to as the Standard Schnauzer. Standard Schnauzers average a height of 46 centimetres and a weight between 12 and 17 kilograms. Later, breeders crossed these standard Schnauzers with Great Danes and other large dog breeds in order to get the Giant Schnauzer. Giant Schnauzers stand at about 60 centimetres tall with a weight between 30 and 35 kilograms. Finally, breeders crossed the Schnauzer and several toy breeds, such as the Poodle, to get the Miniature Schnauzer. Miniature Schnauzers stand at about 30 centimetres tall and weigh between five and seven kilograms. Each variety of the Schnauzer makes a great pet, takes to training very well, and is generally excellent around small children.
