The Scotch Collie is named as such because the breed is descended from dogs living in Scotland and northern England. The Scotch Collie was originally used for herding sheep and guarding livestock. Its protective nature would help it keep the sheep in line and out of danger. These were popular dogs for herders and farmers and that was their main purpose for the first few hundred years of their existence. Now, they are rarely used for this purpose, although they are still a popular dog with a decent population. Instead of being used as a herding dog, the Scotch Collie is now most popular as a show dog or a family pet. They are often seen in show rings both for their looks and for their athletic ability. Scotch Collies are sometimes used as guide and therapy dogs as well.
There are two main types of Scotch Collie. They can either be a Rough Collie or a Smooth Collie. This designation is a way to separate dogs with different coat types. Like the names suggest, Rough Collies have a rough coat and Smooth Collies have a smooth coat. The coat, regardless of the type, can come in sable, blue merle and white. They can also be tri-coloured, exhibiting shades of black, white and tan.
Since Scotch Collies are so smart, they are very easy to train. Their obedient nature helps with this too. They are sweet and loving and make a good family dog. They are even good with children.
