Silken Windhound – Dog Breed Information and Pictures

The Silken Windhound is a very new and rare breed. While most dog breeds have been around for at least a hundred years, this breed has only been in existence for a few decades. They were first created by Francie Stull, an accomplished breeder and raiser of show dogs. She specialised in sight hounds and wanted to create a great new breed of that variety. The Silken Windhound was first bred in 1987. Since the breed has not been around very long since their first litter, there are not that many Silken Windhounds in the world. Still, what little population they have had has been very popular. They can now be found in both North America and Europe.

Silken Windhounds are named as such because their coat has a silky look and feel. It is long and soft. They are also called a Windhound because of their speed. Silken Windhounds are sight hounds. This means they spot their prey and run after it at high speeds. They are among some of the fastest dogs in the world and are related to the Greyhound dog breed.

Silken Windhounds are easy going and laid back. They are comfortable in nearly any situation. Because of this, this breed makes a great pet. They are playful and gentle as part of a family environment. Silken Windhounds have become a good choice for families with small children. However, since they are trusting and friendly with strangers, they do not make very good guard dogs or watch dogs.
