Sloughi – Dog Breed Information and Pictures

The Sloughi dog breed, also known as the Arabian Greyhound and the Sloughi Moghrebi, originates from the North African country of Morocco. While they were eventually raised and bred in Morocco, the true ancestry of this dog breed remains a mystery. Speculated areas of origin include Asia, the Middle East, and Ethiopia. Although it is not known how long the Sloughi dog breed has been around, some historians believe that they have been around for thousands of years based on paintings on earthenware from 3,000 BC.

Sloughis are sight hounds. They use their fantastic sense of sight to spot their prey. They then use their speed and agility to run after the animal. Sloughis look similar to the Greyhound breed as they are tall and slim. This dog breed has lean muscles and a sleek frame that helps their speed. Sloughi dogs have a short coat with fur that lays flat against the body. The colour of the coat of a Sloughi can be a sandy light or red shade. It can also be brindle with black marks on the ears, face, or mantle.

Since they were bred for speed and movement, Sloughis need to be exercised daily. Because of this fact, it is a bad idea to keep them inside the house most of the day. They need space to run and play or they could get sick or end up unhappy. Sloughis are very sensitive, so they are easily affected by changes in their lifestyle and environment.
