The Slovenský Kopov dog breed is better known in English as the Slovakian Hound. As evidenced by its name, the breed originates from the country of Slovakia. The breed was first recognised by major breed organisations in the 1870s. While breeders and historians do not know for certain the ancestry of the Slovenský Kopov, they speculate that it comes from the Hungarian Greyhound, Chart Polski, and Austrian Black and Tan Hounds. This is based both on the Slovenský Kopov’s appearance and on its body shape. The Slovenský Kopov dog breed is very popular in Slovakia although it is rare to find them in other parts of the world or even in other countries in Europe.
While the Slovenský Kopov is very interesting looking, they are not normally used as a show dog. Rather, the Slovenský Kopov was specifically bred for hunting. Owners of these dogs rarely stray from that role when breeding and raising their dog. The Slovenský Kopov is a scent hound. This means that it hunts primarily by its sense of smell. While most dogs have a superior sense of smell, the Slovenský Kopov’s sense of smell is even better than normal. It can find its prey just by the way that it smells. While they can fight animals of nearly all sizes, they are most often used for hunting wild boar.
The Slovenský Kopov is strictly a black and tan dog. They have black fur over most of their body with tan coloured fur on their muzzle and legs.
