The Italian originating dog, the Spinone Italiano, can sometimes be referred to as the Italian Spinone, the Italian Griffon, or the Italian Coarsehaired Pointer. This breed is ancient and has been around for thousands of years. In fact, their heritage can be reliably traced back to as far as 500 BC. The Spinone Italiano is said to be one of the oldest gundogs breeds still in existence. Beyond that, little is known about the origin of the dog breed.
The Spinone Italiano dog breed is adept at many different aspects of hunting and working. They are particularly good at pointing. When they are out in the field, whether it be open plains or wooded forests, the Spinone Italiano will spot its foe. Once it does, it straightens out its body and points its nose toward the prey. The hunter will then know where to find the game, shooting it dead. Spinone Italiano dogs are also very good at retrieving. Once a hunter has felled a foe and signalled their dog, the Spinone Italiano will then run out to retrieve the animal in its jaws. Besides hunting, Spinone Italiano dogs are also good at being an assistance dog or just a plain companion. They have made a wonderful pet for Italian families for hundreds of years.
As a breed, the Spinoni Italiani is a medium-size dog. They average a height between 59 and 79 centimetres and a weight between 29 and 39 kilograms. Females of the breed tend to be a bit shorter and noticeably lighter than the males.
