Unlike ancient dog breeds, much is known about the origin of the Sporting Lucas Terrier. A Scottish man named Brian Plummer decided that he wanted to create a new breed of terrier that made an even better working dog. He set to work in the 1990s in order to create this new breed. He crossed several different terriers together, including the Lucas Terrier and the Jack Russell Terrier. There were also several other terrier breeds that contributed to making the Sporting Lucas Terrier. At first, Plummer called his new breed the Lucas Terrier. After a certain point in time, true Lucas Terrier enthusiasts came out against this practice and demanded that he make his dogs into a new and different breed. Although he decided to call them the Sporting Lucas Terrier, this breed only has a little bit in common with the original Lucas Terrier. Since the breed is still relatively new, the United Kennel Club of the United States is the only major kennel club to recognise the Sporting Lucas Terrier so far.
Sporting Lucas Terriers are small dogs with very short legs and a long body. They typically stand at around 30 centimetres tall. They have a wiry coat that is medium to long in length. They also have a dense undercoat, which keeps out moisture and cold temperatures. Their coat colours vary, but two different combinations have emerged. The Sporting Lucas Terrier is either mostly white with markings of brown, gray, tan or black or they are mostly covered with these colours and only have a few small markings of white fur.
