If you enjoy playing sports you will find a lot of opportunities to join various different teams when you go to university. Most universities offer activities in many different sports. Football, Rugby, Hockey, Netball, Boxing, and Martial Arts are but a few of those that are on offer to students.
Sports teams play their games within an inter-university league run by the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS). The body governs 50 different sports which compete against each other in leagues. The latest season of 2009/2010 involves over 4000 different teams competing in 16 different league sports.
Most sports at universities are made up of 1st and 2nd teams, so it gives an opportunity for everyone to participate. Usually the teams will have an annual sports awards, where those individuals who have performed exceptionally well will be honoured with recognition from their peers.
The best place to find out about the different sports teams at your university is during the freshers fair. Here you will find most of the teams attempting to lure new students to their teams. Check them all out, as you might come across something interesting that you had not considered before.
It has become more and more common in recent years for new sports team members to undergo rituals and initiation when they join the team. This can be fun, but remember to stay safe and not overdo it on the alcohol as this can (and has in the past) lead to very serious health consequences.
