There is nothing to stop you trying to start your own business, even when you are still at school; just make sure that it doesn’t have an impact on your school work. Additionally, make sure that the school are aware that you are working, so that they are satisfied your work fits with the rules and guidelines on young people working.
Once you have the ‘all clear’ to work, you must decide what you are going to do to start a business. At your age this should be nice and simple: a service that you can do well in, that people are prepared to pay for, the hours fit with school, and you are not going to go into school tired or not having had time to do your homework.
Car washing is a good one, as this can be done during the day on a Saturday or Sunday, and people are prepared to pay for it. Start with friends of your family or just with a few houses on the street you live along. Remember to be polite at all times, and do not be worried if someone does not want you to wash their car – that’s life; you need to accept it and move on. Walking dogs is another good one, as long as your parents are happy with what you are doing and aware of who you are working for and when. Some people can be extremely grateful for someone to take their dog out for them, especially when they are busy.
