You may be eager to get away from home and begin your new student life, but remember that you will also need to think about your safety and wellbeing while there.
The temptation to go out and drink alcohol will be very prominent in your mind due to the various events going on each night of the week. Unfortunately more and more young people are drinking to excess, and this is leaving them more vulnerable to crime. You can put yourself at less risk by following a few simple pieces of advice:
When leaving nightclubs or bars try not to walk home alone, and stay in groups when it is late at night. Parks, dark roads and alleyways provide potential criminals with the opportunity to attack when someone is on their own. However, if you are in a group then this is less likely to happen.
Try not to leave your drink unattended. Most drink spiking incidents occur when someone puts there drink down for just a few seconds.
Remember to lock all windows and doors at night. You may think that the area is safe and just full of students, but you could be a prime target for an opportunist thief. Leaving windows and doors open while you are out will be giving someone an invitation to climb in and steal your laptop or games console.
Report incidents of drug dealing to your university. Although drugs are generally not that high a problem within universities, they do exist, and with drugs comes all sorts of other crime, such as burglary.
