The Stephens Cur dog breed is sometimes known as the Stephen’s Stock Cur dog breed. They even went by the nickname of the “Little Darkies.” They are named after the family that first bred them. The Stephens Family lived in Kentucky in the United States and they bred these dogs for many generations. They now have official recognition in the Continental Kennel Club and the United Kennel Club.
Using its superior sense of smell, the Stephens Cur is a scent hound. They can track other animals through long distances all based on their sense of smell. They are good working dogs and have a strong, muscular body of medium size. Stephens Cur dogs average a height between 40 and 59 centimetres. They also have an average weight of no larger than 25 kilograms. Their height and weight is especially important when the Stephens Cur is being entered into a competition through a kennel club. Otherwise, a low or high weight for one of these dogs is acceptable.
Stephens Cur dogs are very intelligent. They are easy to train, which makes them a perfect dog for both hunting and for entrance into athletic competitions. They have a double coat with a short dense undercoat and a short smooth outer coat. They are mostly black in colour although they can sometimes have white markings on the face, chest, and legs. For kennel club competitions, the white coat should cover no more than one third of the entire body of the Stephens Cur.
